Getting Around

Transportation in Medellín

Taxis and buses are plentiful.

The minimum charge for taxis is about 5300 COP (in 2018).  You can get to downtown for about 10000 COP and to Poblado for 152000 COP.

Buses run about 2100 COP.  You can get an integrated bus / metro ticket for 2300 COP, but you’ll have to purchase that at a metro station BEFORE you board a bus.

Do I Need a Car?

Purchasing a car isn’t necessary.

There are plenty of missionaries living on campus and working on campus who don’t own a car, especially if they are a couple without children living with them.

For us, with three children and therefore having to squeeze uncomfortably into a taxi, we decided we needed a car.

You can purchase a used vehicle  in good condition for about $14,000 – $15,000 USD.  We purchased a Chery VanPass.  Some missionaries who are planning on being here many years purchase SUV’s especially if they are traveling outside the city to less developed areas.

They have spent between $30,000 and $35,000 for a new SUV.  In general, for the same type of car, the cars in Colombia are 25% – 30% more expensive.

Gasoline runs around $3 per gallon as of 2018, which is historically low!
